Piece of the month: the “Taller del Moro”

Throughout the month of March, thanks to the collaboration between the Centre for Studies on Islamic Toledo (CETI), a project of the Foundation of Islamic Culture (FUNCI), the Museum of Santa Cruz and the Museo de Santa Cruz, ¡Vivo! Association, the celebration of the “piece of the month” was resumed.

On this occasion, instead of a specific object from the collections, an entire building was chosen, one of the subsidiaries of the Museum of Santa Cruz: the Taller del Moro.

The activity was organised on Sundays 3, 10 and 17 at 12:00 noon, with free access until full capacity was reached. On each of the days the activity was held, up to four shows were held due to the large number of people who attended and enjoyed the explanations given by Sergio Isabel Ludeña, Scientific Coordinator of the Centre for Studies on Islamic Toledo.

The Taller del Moro is one of the best-documented examples of civil architecture of Islamic tradition in Toledo. The remains preserved (a central hall and two side rooms) correspond to a part of one of the houses built by the Christian nobility of Toledo in the mid-14th century. In its interior space can be seen, among other things, plasterwork (with Arabic epigraphy) and wooden frames (white woodwork), Andalusian-inspired elements that survived beyond the Castilian conquest of the city. It also houses a small part of the Islamic collections of the Museum of Santa Cruz.

The celebration of this activity was a great opportunity for the attendees to get to know in more detail one of the seats of the Museum of Santa Cruz in the city, as well as to discover the past of one of the buildings that best reflects the influences and continuity of Islamic art during the 14th and 15th centuries in Toledo.

The Centre for Studies on Islamic Toledo and the Islamic Culture Foundation would like to thank both the public and, especially, the staff of the Museum of Santa Cruz and the members of the Museo de Santa Cruz, ¡Vivo! Association who made possible the correct development of this piece of the month.
