The Islamic Culture Foundation (FUNCI), through its project “Bouregreg Gardening School of Med-O-Med“, located in Salé, Morocco, for social and environmental purposes, has just published, together with the Moroccan publishing house Kulte Editions, the first ecological gardening guide published in Arabic and French.
The guide, written by landscape gardener Carey Duncan in collaboration with the trainers of the Med-O-Med school, contains the principles of organic gardening applied to the school’s training curriculum and adapted to the climatology and ecological conditions of Morocco and the Mediterranean in general. It is aimed primarily at professionals in the sector, trainers in training and amateur gardeners with a certain amount of experience.
It is prefaced by the Chairman of FUNCI, Cherif Abderrahman Jah, and contains beautiful illustrations by Leila Kutub. The Arabic translation is by Oumaima Machkour, and the design and quality of the book, by Kulte Editions, make it a little gem.
The subject matter contains extensive chapters and sub-chapters on the different main lines:
- Soil
- Water
- Planting techniques
- Biodiversity, harmful and auxiliary insects
- Handling and size of the plants
- Working tools
- Practical information

“Le guide de Jardinage Ecologique” is on sale at the school (Oulja, road to Sala El Jadida, Salé) and will soon be available in various bookshops in Morocco.
The ecological gardening guide would not have been possible without the support of the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID).
