Madrid is the only European capital of Islamic origin, and was founded in the 9th century. As part of an attempt to document the historical heritage of Mayrit (medieval Madrid), FUNCI has established the Centre for the Study of Islamic Madrid, in collaboration with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). The centre’s objective is to promote scientific research, from an archaeological and historical point of view, in relation to the diversity of contemporary Islamic Madrid. To this end, the centre will work to safeguard Madrid’s Islamic heritage, ensuring the dissemination of its invaluable material and immaterial legacy, and its place as part of the common heritage of society as a whole. The research will be conducted from a secular perspective, as a means of promoting intercultural exchange and peaceful coexistence.
